SPACE stands for the Student Partnership for the Advancement of Cosmic Exploration. Allison Willingham, a Mountaineer, founded it under the auspices of the West Virginia Space Grant Consortium, which is a NASA Sponsored organization consisting of 12 WV academic institutions and 8 corporate and scientific partners. Following the 21st Annual Research Symposium in Spring 2015 at WVSU, a SPACE Chapter was organized on campus.
Social activities and the Space Flight Design Challenge(SFDC) are the two main aspects of SPACE activities. The SFDC is organized annually by WVU and allows participating institutions to design a payload consisting of scientific instruments that fit in a sub 4″X4″X1.5″ volume and are suited to a CubeSat configuration. For students who want to participate in the SFDC, 2-credit hour Sub-orbital Payload Design Class is offered in Spring & Fall, and is open to all students through instructor permission. This year (2016), the WVSU payload design features a particle detector and compact fluorescence microscope, in addition to three other experiments.
Some of the social activities sponsored by the SPACE Chapter include regular Stargazing Nights and table tennis tournaments. NASA webinars are also frequently viewed by the group.
Watching the RocSat-C rocket launch was a profound Homer Hickamm moment. I was humbled and overjoyed to be part of it. Whenever I see the video of the launch, it sparks my passion for tinkering. (Umer Rizwan, Team-lead WVSU SFDC Team 2015-16)
You’re statement here:
The XYZ Doohickey Company was founded in 1971, and has been providing quality doohickeys to the public ever since. Located in Gotham City, XYZ employs over 2,000 people and does all kinds of awesome things for the Gotham community. (Danford Smith Jr., Team-lead WVSU SFDC Team 2016-17)
SPACE also encourages its members to promote STEM education in WV as Science Public Outreach Team Ambassadors. This year (2016), 3 students participated in SPOT training at the National Radio Astronomy Observatory, Greenbank, WV. One was a returning certified ambassador.
As a young organization, SPACE is expanding its revenue stream, outreach and philanthropy.
